Davidson is a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, located on the banks of Lake Norman. The city has a population of 10,944 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metro area. The city is also home to Davidson College, which changed its name to Davidson in 1891. The college, which had been known as the Linden Cotton Factory, began operating on the west side of the rail corridor. In 1908, two other cotton mills opened nearby, the Delburg and Linden companies, which merged to form the prestigious 'Davidson Cotton Mill.' The school has a rich history of supporting the African American community, and is the ideal place to study history.
In the early 20th century, Davidson's black population began to grow and become increasingly educated. The Davidson Methodist Church was founded in 1908, and today it stands on South Main Street. In the 1890s, a prominent African American named Ralph Johnson financed construction of several well-constructed homes in the black section of town. In the late nineteenth century, his son, Otho "Tobe" Johnson, a dry cleaning and pressing club owner, sold the property to John Eli Brattain. The Brattain family built a house, which is still standing.
Davidson has a history of being a progressive community. Many residents were members of the Presbyterian Church, but many also attended the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius. The Davidson Methodist Church was founded in 1908 and is located on South Main Street. The Scofield Store, which is still open today, was built by Stephen C. Scofield, the son of John N. Scofield. The Scofield family purchased the plot of land in Davidson and built the Old Chambers building. This house is still in use today.
